A filling is a restorative treatment used to treat tooth decay and cavities. This is needed because, when decay or cavities go untreated, bacteria can collect in the tooth and cause an infection. At the Center for Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, our dentist uses a liquid composite material to carefully fill the cavity in the tooth. This will restore the tooth’s strength and structure and prevent the infection from spreading further.
Our dentist will then shape the composite material to match the natural shape of the patient’s teeth for a perfect finish. As with most dental procedures, patients will need to return for a follow-up appointment to check the filling and ensure that no issues have arisen.
The Procedure for Fillings
Cavities are holes in the teeth's surface due to decay. The most common symptoms of cavities include persistent toothache, swollen gums, and sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures. Our dentist will begin the procedure by numbing the affected area to prevent the patient from feeling pain or discomfort. The decayed portion of the tooth is then removed before the area is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. A dental filling is then placed in the cavity to seal it and prevent bacteria from entering and causing further decay. The procedure is usually completed by placing a temporary crown over the tooth while the permanent restoration is fabricated in the lab. Once the crown arrives, it is cemented over the existing temporary one to complete the procedure and restore the tooth to full functionality.
Benefits of Dental Fillings
Pain Relief
A toothache is a symptom and not the cause of the problem. If you experience pain, you must address the underlying cause of the problem. However, the pain is usually alleviated immediately when you come into the office for a filling. This is because cavities cause decay that exposes the tooth's nerve, causing pain. Fillings are one of the ways your dentist can take away this pain and allow you to chew and speak normally again.
Repairing Damaged Teeth
If your teeth are chipped, cracked, or worn down, restorative dentistry can repair the damage and give you a more attractive smile. Fillings are the most common restoration procedure and can be performed on front and back teeth.
Preventing Tooth Breakage
Fillings also help restore the strength of a tooth that has suffered minor damage. The filling helps restore the tooth's natural shape and strengthen it to prevent breakage in the future. This keeps the tooth strong and healthy enough to perform its functions like chewing and speaking for many years.
